The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
