Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
