The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Competitors are granted the right to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
